My chosen capture technology has updated over the last 20 years. The technique has also evolved to a whole new vision of what the Modernist aesthetic can be. This technique, including hints of infrared as well as the heaviness of traditional modernism, creates a new look that I can call my own. The image “Grassy Brook” is a prime example.

The modernist aesthetic is not only a particular look but also a departure from traditional art and subject of the 19th century and before. The 20th century modernist movement celebrated the human construct, details and people as landscape and modernist constructs. Capturing “Grassy Brook” through a modernist aesthetic might seem like departure of the subject best defining the Modernist movement. In this case, “Grassy Brook” is a completely human construct. The image is captured from a bridge and road that was put in place over 100 years ago. The area was logged and clear cut. Flooding due to the road caused changes in the course of the river. “Grassy Brook” as we see it today would not exist without human constructs.

The Modernist aesthetic is not appropriate for every subject. During this 20 year time period, colour projects have been completed but they are the lesser priority and will be addressed in the future.

Photography, to be truly appreciated, must be shared since sharing the experience is as important as creating the images. The website and the associated shows and projects are intended to bring the sharing to the forefront.

My photography will continue until I am no longer able to pick up a camera. The last 20 years of photographic work has been an exploration of the world through a Modernist black and white aesthetic that evolved from the advances in digital capture.

The advances finally replicated the range that glass plate negatives and photo gravure printing achieved. The result is a very modernist and heavy black and white style that is consistent and repeatable. The tones achieved are believable and replicate the tones of glass plate film. This result is primarily achieved in camera with filtration and supporting light conditions.
